I use Citadel as my example but any brand name model paint is probably equally as good or better (Valejo, Scalecolor, etc). Feb 12 (edited) These are great guides, but does anyone know where I might find some guide on how to paint the locked minis in Jaws of The Lion I am having the darndest time even finding PICTURES of the things. I highlight with the same paint I use for the basecoat thinned with water. One thing I was unable to find a substitute for in cheaper generic brands were shades/washes, and I ended up buying the Citadel shades only because I couldn't find a cheaper alternative.
I do try and avoid the el-cheapo dollar store acrylic paint just because it has a weird consistency and seems to always be a bit translucent when it dries. I have been painting things other than miniatures for years and don't really notice a difference when they are side to side on a palette, and AFAIK Citadel base colours are just acrylic with nothing in them to make them special. For base colours I use Citadel paints and the acrylic stuff from Michael's interchangeably.
